Salvia spathacea is a beautiful ground hugging perennial originating from my home state of California. Found mostly in coastal oak woodlands and grasslands it grows best where it receives part sun during the day and little summer water. Provided that it receives adequate spring rains it will spread slowly by underground stolons. Throughout spring and summer from its basal growing crown a terminal flower spike gives rise to a series of whorled inflorescence with scarlet-pink flowers. Deadhead flowers before the next spring and mulch lightly with composted mulch to stimulate its running roots.
